Types of Electric Vehicles
If you’re looking to make the electric switch, save money on fuel, and reduce your carbon footprint, drivers in Morristown, TN, have a range of options, particularly in the Hyundai lineup. There are three types of electric vehicles on the market today – BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs – and the Hyundai lineup includes models in each category. Each vehicle type offers its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Which type is right for you depends on your driving habits and your goals in terms of fuel economy and eco-friendliness. Let’s explore each electric vehicle option to determine which is the best fit for your lifestyle.
Battery Electric Vehicles
If your goal is to completely break up with the gas pump, Battery Electric Vehicles or BEVs are what you’re looking for. Instead of an engine powered by gasoline or diesel, BEV powertrains consist of one or more electric motors connected to rechargeable batteries. These vehicles offer the same level of performance, power, and comfort as their gas-powered counterparts but with zero tailpipe emissions. The 2024 Hyundai lineup includes three BEV options:
- 2024 KONA Electric
- 2024 IONIQ 6
- 2024 IONIQ 5
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
If you’re not ready to go completely gasoline-free, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) offer middle-of-the-road options that allow you to experience what it’s like driving an EV without giving up the convenience of a traditional powertrain. These models have both an engine and a motor connected to a battery pack. Like a BEV, the battery pack can be recharged using a Level 2 charger, but PHEVs have a significantly lower electric range than BEVs, which can be as much as 300 miles. PHEVs can get up to 40 miles at the high end, which is enough for many drivers to complete their morning commute without using a single drop of gas. Once the charge is gone, though, your vehicle will automatically switch back to using gasoline. Hyundai has two plug-in hybrid options – the 2024 TUCSON Plug-in Hybrid and the 2024 SANTA FE Plug-in Hybrid.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are very similar to PHEVs. They utilize both a gas-powered engine and a motor. Unlike PHEVs however, they don’t have the option to recharge at a charging station and rely solely on regenerative braking to keep their battery-packs juiced up. They also lack an electric-only driving mode. Instead, the electric motors in these vehicles act more like an assistant to the gasoline engine, boosting its horsepower, increasing its fuel efficiency, and reducing the amount of pollutants the car produces. The Hyundai lineup currently includes four hybrid options.
- Santa Fe Hybrid
- Tucson Hybrid
- Elantra Hybrid
- Sonata
